Remembering drummer Clyde Stubblefield, born on April 18th, 1943 in Chattanooga, Tennessee!
Stubblefield called Macon, GA home in the early 1960s where he played with Eddie Kirkland and Otis Redding.
In 1965, Clyde joined James Brown’s along with drummer John “Jabo” Starks, and together, the two became the enduring archetype for “double drumming” and funk groove.
Stubblefield’s innovation on Brown’s “Funky Drummer” has been sampled well over a thousand times and is considered to be one of the defining patterns in hip hop.
