Houston Healthcare High School Basketball Highlight Team of the Week: The Veterans Warhawks Varsity Boys

The Veterans Boys Varsity Basketball team has had an incredible season this year with a current record of 22-2 overall and 6-1 in region play. The Warhawks won big Wednesday night against Thomas Co Central with a final score of 63-30. That win all but gives them the regular season region title, which in turn means they’ll have the home-court advantage in the Region 1-AAAAA Tournament.

The Warhawks’ leading scorer is 6’0 Junior, #2 DeAngelo Hines, who is currently averaging 12.4 points per game this season. In addition to points, he’s been averaging 2.0 assists per game, 2.5 rebounds, 2.2 steals, and 0.2 blocks. His season high for points scored in a game came back on December 27th when he accumulated 19 points in a matchup versus Monticello that took place during the Mary Persons Christmas Tournament, a game the Warhawks won 63-46.

Two other players of note are 6’5 Sophomore, #13 T.J. Grant, and 6’2 senior, #3 Jaylyn Williams.

Grant has averaged 11.5 points per game and Williams is just under him with 10.7. Grant has had two double-doubles this season with one coming against Mary Persons where he scored 18 points and had 10 rebounds. The second was against Bleckley Co in the Warhawks’ season opener, a game in which Grant had 10 points and 10 rebounds. With still two years left his high school career, Grant is sure to become an even bigger star and leader in the seasons to come. Williams has also had a stellar season, averaging 3.1 assists per game, 5.4 rebounds, 1.6 steals, and 0.7 blocks– far above the national average. Williams tied the school record for most assists in a game with 8 back on December 20th in a 75-52 home win over Northside. Williams also scored 14 points and 9 rebounds in that game, making him close to having a triple-double. Hines, Grant and Williams make up the Varsity Boys Warhawks Big 3.

Veterans is currently ranked #5 in Class AAAAA, #25 in Georgia, and #743 in the Nation. Veterans have their last regular-season game tonight at 7:30 against the Harris Co Tigers. The Warhawks already defeated the Tigers 67-47 on the road back on January 7th. With that said, Harris Co is a team that cannot be slept on as they defeated the visiting Demons 56-54 back on January 20th. It should make for a good final regular-season matchup before the Warhawks head into the Region 1-AAAAA Tournament.
