CGTC Titans Win Third Consecutive Conference Title, Earn Trip to National Tourney

With a 74-70 victory over Georgia Highlands College on Saturday, the Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) Titans were crowned the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) Region 17 Men’s Basketball Champions for the third consecutive year.

Similar to their GCAA semifinal matchup on Friday night, the Titans faced a 12-point deficit at the 2:47 mark in the first half. Shooting 12 of 31 from the field, the Titans trailed Georgia Highlands 37-30 at halftime.

After the halftime break, the Titans took the court with a renewed sense of urgency. Going on a 16-3 run to start the second half, the Titans found themselves on the upside of a 46-40 score.

With the Titans having the lead down the stretch, Georgia Highlands was forced to commit fouls to stop the clock. Taking advantage of the moment, the Titans showed their strength at the charity stripe going 16 of 20 in the second half. Freshman Montavious Terrell accounted for 12 of the Titans’ free throw points, missing only once.

Sophomore Myles Washington had a highly efficient game for the Titans, shooting 8 of 12 from the field, 3 of 3 from beyond the arc, and 4 of 4 from the free throw line. Washington finished with a team-high 23 points, five rebounds, one assist, three steals, and one block.

Lincoln Smith added 15 points, five rebounds, and two steals. Terrell finished with 12 points three rebounds, and three assists, while Champ Dawson contributed 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and one block.

Following the game, Myles Washington and Champ Dawson were named to the GCAA Region 17 All-Tournament Team. Washington was also named the GCAA Tournament’s Most Valuable Player.

As the GCAA Region 17 Champions, the Titans receive an automatic bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Tournament in Hutchinson, Kansas March 16-21, 2020. This will mark the Titans’ fourth overall trip to Hutchinson in program history.

Seeding for the national tournament will take place on Monday, March 9 during the NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Selection Show, which will air at 1:00 PM ET on NJCAA Championship TV at www.njcaachampstv.com.
