The Macon Arts Alliance has announced a multi-tiered Cultural Plan designed to drive economic growth and community development in Central Georgia.
This initiative is the result of a year-long research and development process that was overseen by a 72-person committee that utilized Macon-Bibb’s current cultural landscape, surveys of nearly a thousand citizens, dozens of interviews, and events to determine 5 top priorities for success:
Branding Macon as a creative destination.
Providing access to quality arts education.
Encouraging artists at every level.
Helping communities establish distinctive identities.
Continued development of new and existing audiences.
In addition to these priorities, the Cultural Plan also provides multiple strategies to perpetuate and maintain the initiative including:
The potential creation of a Senior Advisor for Arts and Culture within the consolidated government.
A cultural task force to be coordinated by the Macon Arts Alliance.
A re-granting program to better disperse funds in the community.
A Percent for Art Program that would designate 1% of publicly funded developments towards public art.
An OLOST implementation in 2023 that would designate 1 millage rate of new tax revenue for arts & culture and establish a Cultural Trust Fund.

The Macon Cultural Plan was made possible by a grant from the Knight Foundation and created through a partnership between the Macon Arts Alliance, Visit Macon, Community Foundation of Central Georgia, Greater Macon Chamber of Commerce, Bibb County School District, Macon-Bibb County, Mercer University, and the Museum of Arts and Sciences.
