‘The best hockey that anybody’s ever seen in Macon, Georgia’: Macon Mayhem GM Blair Floyd Talks 2021 Season, New Owners & More!

On January 2nd, 2021, Macon Mayhem Hockey is returning to the Macon Coliseum with all the action Central Georgians have grown to love since the team’s debut in 2015. COVID-19 precautions led the Southern Professional Hockey League to cancel games and postpone the ’20-’21 season, but major announcements and plans have continued to engage fans and build anticipation for a new era in Macon Mayhem Hockey.

One of the greatest changes to impact the Mayhem organization is a new ownership group comprised exclusively of local leaders– including Mayhem General Manager Blair Floyd.

“There’s a different level of passion,” says Floyd. “Not only are they hockey fans, but they’re also fans of the community where they want to see things like the Macon Mayhem and other sporting teams succeed for quality of life here.”

Floyd says that despite the challenges of navigating the sport during the pandemic, the group has already been embraced by fans and sponsors of the team as well as the players.

“[The owners] are in and out of the office every day. So the players will see them around. I think it’s huge for the players to see ownership involved in that aspect and see that they really care about them and the success of the organization.”

This season will see 42 games played against four different teams featuring some of the Mayhem’s greatest rivals– the Birmingham Bulls, the Huntsville Havoc, the Pensacola Ice Flyers, and the Knoxville Ice Bears.

“We had five teams opt-out in our league, so [it’s a] very reasonable schedule,” says Floyd. “We play everybody an even number, which is nice. The other thing is, there’s no long overnight trips for us, so that’s a plus for the team as well.”

The Mayhem are also proud to welcome back Coach Kevin Kerr to the organization. Coach Kerr served as the Mayhem’s first head coach from 2015 until 2018, leading the team to a President’s Cup Championship in the 2016-2017 season.

Season tickets are currently on sale now with single-game options and special flex plans available beginning December 1st. Floyd says the team and the staff at the Macon Coliseum will be implementing the recommended COVID-19 regulations to ensure a fun and safe experience for fans.

“You will see limited seating capacity. We’re going to make sure that everybody’s socially distanced. We’re going to require masks when you’re up and about moving around the arena. Once you get to your seat, you’ll be allowed to take them off.”

In addition, more ticket options will be unveiled next month including half-season & five-game plans and the popular family four-pack.

“It’s not just hockey, it’s a family experience,” says Floyd. “There’s music, there’s dancing, there’s games going on… Even if you don’t understand the sport, I encourage you to come out with your family and have as much fun as possible.”

The Macon Mayhem are planning some spectacular theme nights this year with more surprises yet to be unveiled. Though Floyd admits that there will be challenges ahead, he’s confident that this will be an amazing season for the Macon Mayhem.

“I can say it’s gonna be the best hockey that anybody’s ever seen in Macon, Georgia!”
